SPLITTINGS AND RE-COUPLINGS
(Propositions for the Tactile)
2022

Splittings and Re-couplings brings together fragments of forms and images from across a range of cultures and categorizations - from a repertoire of botanical, zoological images, forms from verbal and mathematical languages in calligraphic or pictographic traditions of writing; ancient and modern agrarian and maritime traditions of knots and equipment, fragmented forms representing architectural elements, tools and other prosthetics from craft traditions of sewing, weaving and hand carving.
Through the dystopias of the past and future, these works monumentalize a moment in the present when we could witness (albeit deteriorating) the saturations (and tensions) of culture with nature; the heterogeneities of seasons and places, rich aromas and flavors of roses and mushrooms and our maniacal desires of harnessing or homogenizing tendencies by ordering and othering.
Through soft sculptural formations and the coarseness of the handmade, the works attempt to re-orient the body’s relational associations with languages – it mixes and merges disparate signs; a retake on the ancient logographs and forgotten forms of writing to assimilate into the ASMR tactics of communication.
These fragments propose metaphoric notes towards the tactile and the sensual as the domineering mode of communication.
