PRIMAL REMINDERS
(EXPERIENCE OF INNOCENCE)
2017
These reading cards on the table are a personal tribute to the 17th century Japanese poet Matsuo Basho. These cards are currently a part of an ongoing larger project of an artists’ book.
I have been inspired by the refined form of Haiku writing and Basho’s seemingly simple imageries from nature opening a realm of philosophical consciousness, introspection and a conscious, renewed relationship to environment.
Each card brings together a mundane experience in the form of image and text. The cards are made as literary reminders to invigorate our memory and to renew our relationship with the mundane world of living with other beings (that may be more vulnerable than us) and hold a large share in the sustenance of a healthy ecosystem.
The works also started as a small exercise of archiving and recording dead insects found during the pre-autumn days at a residency in northern Japan. I intend to develop this work further with more nuances in the structure of an intended book.
Gouache on acid free paper, inked text. 30 x 21 cms each card on folding.
